Resurrecting my build log of Winchelsea that I started shortly after Chuck released the model. I’d say it’s about 95% complete right now and I will complete the build!

My Winnie was built mostly in an engine room aboard a private yacht I worked on, she may have more miles under her keel than the real one.

I also sailed (on an actual sailboat) her down to the Caribbean where the second part of the build took place over a couple years, after a nice sail back north and cross country road trip she’s now home in the PNW at PSSC with her own dedicated work bench (taken over by Neptune capstan kits), awaiting final assembly and display! Stay tuned.

Moving forward with my Winnie build. Framing, fairing and planking.

This was my first go at planking a model using Chuck’s technique, the results of this saved my interest in this hobby.

Love seeing your build log get recreated. Do you remember what you used for the bow filler? Looks like it would work better than balsa or basswood.

I actually used auto body filler and I regretted it. It was much harder to sand than I anticipated especially while trying to avoid the knee and the keep parts. I would recommend balsa and will use it my next time around.

Conclusion of planking my Winnie and on to a thorough block sanding with several WOP treatments. This was my first planking job and I was very satisfied with the results. Winchelsea is an excellent project for developing some serious modeling skills.

You did an excellent job planking. The Winnie group project had started around the time I finished planking my Cheerful, and I remember thinking, "I don't know how they have the endurance to plank something that big!" Haha.

Haha it felt like an endurance marathon for sure. Cheerful was the warm up that I should have done. I just told myself get at least 2 strakes/day and I’ll eventually get There.

Haha. I thought I was the only one setting planking goals. For me it was 3 individual planks a day. Though at times it felt like I'd never finish. I selected Cheerful as a good warmup for a bigger build, but I'm still working on it! Life and other interests keep getting in the way of progress.

Since I enjoy torturing myself I decided to take a little side quest before I began chapter 4, I wanted to add lights to my Winnie but I didn’t want to just add lights, I wanted to add proper lanterns with lights small enough to fit inside them and also look like candles, oh I don’t want to see any wiring either. Luckily Evan’s designs LED’s had exactly what I needed, these micro LED’s they sell are about 1mm^2 and the wires are so small that I could literally insert them into a razor blade slice on the bottom of the deck beams and from there run them into the deck clamp where they were soldered to the main wiring on the model. The only bit of wire that is barely visible is that comes down from the beam and feeds into the lantern and even that is obstructed by the hardware supporting it. What a win for JJ! Now I just needed to install about 25 of them. It was a nice detour that set me back a little but I enjoyed it so much that I’ve decided to repeat it on Portland and use twice as many lights!

The second photo looks like a 5-alarm fire!! 🤣

@Scrubbyj427 - Are you considering offering the 1:48 scale lanterns as a future product? If not, are you able to share your source of them? I located the small leds, but the lanterns are proving a challenge to source. (or I'm not looking in the right places 🙂 )

Hi Steve,

Yes I will offer them, I have been meaning to get them up on my site and haven’t gotten that far. I will get them up when I get home from work next month. I have the final design set up to print and the first few are already on my Portland.
