This is a repost of my scratch build of the Bomb Vessel Granado 1742. I am doing it in a large 1:24 scale.

First thing to do was create framing jig. The plans were glued to 3/4" plywood and cut out on the scroll saw. Each frame location is clearly marked.

For a size reference I put my 1:48 Triton Cross Section inside the framing jig.

Next thing to do was mill billets to cut the frames out of. I had some nice cherry cut offs from Stickley Furniture Factory that I cut down.

Now that I had wood for the frames it was time to cut them out. First step was to cut out the frame pieces from the plans and rubber cement them to the cherry billets.

Some frames had special notches that had additional cuts.

After the individual pieces were cut out they were placed over the plans and tweeked until the matched the plans. Then they were glued up and stacked with a weight on them to hopefully keep them from warping.

Seeing that the frames were so large I was able to use a full-size oscillating sander to final shape them.

After shaping them tree nails were added.

Now that I had taken care of the frames, I needed to cut out the keel. I used the Byrnes Saw, chisels and files.

After the keel was made, strips were glued to the build board to secure the keel.

After the keel was secured it was time to start adding the frames.

You can see the cut outs for the sweep and gun ports.

Frames were continued to be added. Bridging was placed between the frames to at the wales line. This makes the hull good and solid for fairing. Once all the frames were added they were tree nailed to the keel.

The interior of the hull was faired and fully sanded and WOP was applied.

Then the exterior was sanded. Notice the full-size palm sander that was used.

The keelson was added next.

Now it was time to work on the mortar pit.

The floor and futtock riders.

The mortar deck clamps and thick stuff.

Now it was on to the shot locker.

The base of the locker was added.

The sides and the racks cut out.

Jewelry beads were used for the cannon balls. The holes filled and painted black.

Now it was time t work on the bomb pit. First were the deck beams. They sat on top of the motor shell room.

The deck was in two layers. The first layer flat and the second layer had a cut out for the mortar.

Now it was time to cut out the deck framing.

The beams were cut out, test fit and marked for cutting the notches.

Carlings, hanging knees and lodging knees were added.

Mortar pit housing dimensions were taken from the plans. I first fit the walls inside the pit. Once I worked out the angles and temporarily put the walls in place.

I then marked, notched and placed the bracing.

The walls were then placed inside of the bracing.

Then the main hatch was made and placed.

It was time to plank the deck. I used holly for the planks. The hatch was not glued in place yet.

Tree nails were now added.

Inboard was planked with red heart.

Time to plank. I used boxwood. The wales were boxwood dyed with Fiebings black leather dye.

Cap rail profile was scraped and also dyed black.

Ladder profile was cut on the table saw and cut to length. I clamped a ruler to the hull to keep my row straight.

Now it was time to make the carriages for the canon and mortar.

Now I built the cover for the mortar

Thanks Glenn, Yes it was quite a different experience and a whole lot of fun.

Well, we have carriages I guess we need to make something to put on them. I turned the cannon out of some aluminum.

The mortar was turned on the lathe and was nylon rod 1.5" in diameter.

Time for the deadeye chainplates.

I needed to make some swivel guns. I was going to turn them but I noticed that Syren long guns were the same size so I cheated. 😉
