Hobbymill.EU News and Updates

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Glad to be part of this community.

Some updates:

  • Developing Hobbymill.eu page is ongoing, seems to be like never ending story.

  • Add to cart function is working but there isnt anything really in stock and its open to test functionality.

  • Instead of sending me separate email you can send it via custom quote calculator
    https://hobbymill.eu/custom-order
There are imperial and metric dimensions plus you can request any other dimension.

If possible use that as with power of AI i have created automatic pricing calculator that prefills all info and allows me to answer you faster.

  • Building stock is ongoing and i will also offer lumber in general, specially useful for scratch builders who would like to mill their own wood.

  • Knife/pen blanks and unique pieces are basically wood that does not suit for ship modelling quality.

  • Strips on webpage that will be stock items: packages are always cut from same blank. Meaning if you buy 50pcs package then those 50 pcs were cut from same blank to minimize color variation, that also goes for package of 10. Probably at some point there will also be packages of 100 as there seems to be demand for that.

Spices available still:

  • Alaskan Yellow cedar

  • Pearwood / Swiss pear - darker and lighter

  • Castello boxwood

  • Black hornbeam

  • White hornbeam

  • European maple (new addon)

At some point i will also offer laser-able sheets.

Basically what you see on webpage now is what will be there in future.

Tried to be useful today and prepared some blanks of light Swiss pear for shop.

Let me know if there are any questions or even ideas.

  • 2 weeks later...

Figured I would chime in and give a testimonial.

I ordered from Vahur earlier this year and was very happy with the quality of the wood he sent me. Everything was carefully packaged and he included a little extra of everything which is always nice. The grain on the wood was tight and all the strips were very uniform and accurate. I will 100% be ordering from him again when it comes time to get more wood.

Hi Everyone!

Im making a small break from roof renovation as i got it watertight. Will focus on family and hobbymill for a while.

In regards of that i will be making orders that i have in backlog and will also answer up little quicker to requests.

Even though website said that you cant make any orders it was set up so you could really order and some items were in stock. So i got few orders trough website also.
I guess that means web ordering is now open but i havent really put much stuff into stock yet. I will focus on that this week to get into stock what is ready and then will start building stock for other items also. Main focus will be pearwood and castello boxwood for now, others will follow.

My blade delivery is little late for Byrnes saw so i have only 2 blades left until im out..... As soon as they arrive they are available others also.

Ahaa, all DDM members get minimum 5% discount, just say that you are from DDM.

So in mean time: Happy Modelling!!!

Hi,

I have now updated the inventory based on whats available.

As said before, stock items do not have matching color guarantee. For matching color use custom quote function as then order will be milled for you.

Now items in stock are mainly CB, pear and black hornbeam sheets and squares. Also some strips.

Other items will follow.

When at checkout use code "DDM" for Drydockmodelers 5% discount.

Let me know if there are any questions or issues.

Hi everyone,

Few topics:

  • New blades

  • Wood upgrade packages

  • General ordering

  • What you would like to see?

BLADES

I have now received new blades for Hobbymill and they are also available for others.

I also ordered new type of blade that has teeth running after every other (not sure how to say this).

Blade itself is 80mm, 0.8mm thick, hollow ground (thinner at middle) and 74 AW teeth. Center hole is 1/2 inch (Byrnes saw setup).

image.pngimage.png

The blade cuts great, like butter, cutting speed better than normal blade. Only thing is that on one side of the strip there are very small grooves, probably so microscopic that slight sanding of the blade could fix it, not sure.

I have had such thing before with some blades but havent really considered it "quality" issue as its very microscopic and will be sanded anyway.

image.pngimage.png

Would there be any interest in such blade? At the moment i got it with sample price but i guess my selling price would be around 25-28 eur.

I did test cut even with 12mm pear and cutting speed is very good compared to normal blade.

The groove disturbs me a bit but as said even other blades have that time to time and its very small grooves on only one side that will be sanded anyway. Meaning i will probably give it proper production test as i have 3 test blades and decide based on that.

WOOD UPGRADE PACKAGES

I have noticed some comments to kit makers to upgrade their wood packages and also have had quite few clients ordering planking packages for already bought kits.

Here come the question: what kits you would like to have upgrade packages for (i know its tough question).

Also one option is that i will put new product: 100 package strips for most common sizes then its always available as CB and pear.

GENERAL ORDERING

If item isnt in stock then this means you can custom order it with some few weeks of lead time. Example if Winchelsea isnt in stock then just email me and you get offer with delivery time.

WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE?

Are there any additional types of wood you would like? Some might say cherry but i havent really been asked that over the years.

Holly i know but at this stage hard to get with suitable price.

What additional product you feel that you are missing? Chuck and JJ do greate work with all the accessories and kits but is there anything?

With the Byrnes stock depleted a source for replacement blades is a nice idea, but unfortunately for me in the US the price, shipping and now tariffs makes a EU choice too expensive. Plus it’s a really such a low volume need I’d think keeping stock may not prove worth it.

As long as Chuck provides the mini kits a wood package for Cheerful, Winchelsea seem like a great idea. I know JJ is offering the Medway Long Boat in the US, it would be great to have an alternative source. I don’t know how it would work with other kits other than custom orders.

I once had but couldn’t find again a yellow wood, don’t recall the name used to replace wood painted yellow ochre for a more natural look. Holly at a reasonable price would definitely be great. A couple of Winchelsea’s were built from Cherry, Rusty in particular had an excellent cherry build. I don’t know enough about its properties to distinguish it from the now more prevalent pear.

Thanks for asking for input, great to have you as a DDM sponsor!

Hello Vahur,

For me the ability to do special orders is important. After using high quality boxwood on my current Cheerful build, I wouldn't want to go back to a lower quality wood. I'm what I would call an occasional ship modeler, so I don't want the expense of purchasing my own tools to mill my own wood for an interest I only devote part of my hobby time to. The fact that you're happy to do special orders means that for any future project of mine, I can come up with a wood list, contact you for the details, pricing, and time to fill the order, and happily be ready start building once I receive the order.

Hi,

Thank you everyone for support and input.

Blades i offer anyway as i buy them for myself also and i usually buy them once a year.

Fellow modeller asked about blades for Proxxon FET so i already ordered adapter ring to test it out.

So in future there will be adapter or already correct size center hole for Proxxon FET.

New spices wise i will take it slow.

I will have European maple and alder (mainly used for laser cutting).

Holly - If i find source with reasonable price then i will bring it in.

Cherry - i has been substitute for pear in US market as i understand and no plans to start offering that for now.

But again thank you again for inputs. Its important to understand what you guys need.

I have been thinking of getting the Proxxon FET and if it works out with your blade, it would make the buying decision an easy one.

Thanks

Another customer for Proxxon blades if available!

Is the white hornbeam a suitable replacement for holly? I'm guessing it is "grain-ier" but I'm not familiar with it....

Hi,

Im trying to source proper adapters for 12,7mm holes that im having little trouble with.

I have used adapters myself in past and they work totally fine.

For start i prefer not to build up stock for 10mm hole blades as that would make it more expensive for you guys also.

Easier is to share my daily blades.

I will inform here as soon as thats sorted.

Yesterday i found some old original Martindale blades that i got from Byrnes and they have hollow ground also: outside of the blade is thicker than middle part.

White hornbeam has greyish grain and its totally different from holly, holly for me is holy grail that has virtually no grain.

I will do some photos for comparsion. But if you are looking something white then i have nice batch of white maple (not hard maple).

Will show all those on photos quite soon here.

No problem on the blades, I know it takes time to find stuff!

The maple might work nicely, the photos would be great when you have time!
