Morning all, I recently started my build of the SoS after finishing a 1/72 HMS Victory I have just finished the first planking and moved the bowsprit to what is generally seen as the correct position (offset to the stbd and running centralized.

Anyway hope you can pull up a chair should be a fairly long build.

Hi she is 1/78, and thank you :)

Ok my first dilemma the deck calls for stain and varnish, but I don't think that will look right so decided to plank all the decks with cherry strips 3 x 0.5mm your thoughts?

Did a bit of modifying the beakhead for the offset bowsprit. going to plank it so will tidy it all up.

done for the day should get my cherry wood planks tomorrow

Got my planks this morning and managed to do 1/3 of the main deck before realising it's wrong, so had to strip it ..... anyway started again and got this far

Finished the first deck, sanded and applied a bit of danish oil which has darkened it somewhat, it should dry a bit lighter

No Idea how it will turn out but hoping good

nice work. Toothpicks can also be placed here (red), 1 or 2 of your choice.

And yes, with Danish oil your deck gets darker.

Hi Brian, I think we are all slightly mad doing this hobby! 🤪

Starting over is part of the process with our models I think, done that on most of my build at one stage or another; copper plates on my Bounty being a prime example.

I agree. On my first couple of ships if I did something wrong or it just wasn’t good enough I just plowed ahead. Learning to stop, undo and redo things was a huge lesson for me to learn.

A redo... sounds familiar.

You can also represent the nails using a pencil, your choice of course.

First, fit the deckplanks and sand.

Apply Danish oil.

And then start "nailing".

when using the toothpicks.

install and sand the deck planks.

Drill holes and insert toothpicks, sand or scrape.

And finally apply Danish oil.

That's how I do this.

At the risk of sounding pernickety though, your title reads "Manuta (sic) 1:72". Should it not be "Sergal 1:78"? I know, I know, 1st world problems and all that 😁

The heading was renamed by one of the devs who am I to argue lol

Going to change the deck planking to a shift 4 planking after some research. for ease of use 10cm, followed by 2.5cm, 5cm, 7.5cm. Typically the planks were 25 feet long so 1/78 = 9.77cm.
