MicroLux Table Saw

The Proxxon FET is well liked but i would like to give a slightly different opinion. They are too expensive for the somewhat mediocre quality offered. The longitudinal stop is of rather questional quality and the Proxxon sawblades are expensive and not particularly durable (so, if you can, find better ones). Sadly, there are few better alternatives. Byrnes, of course but they are expensive and what else is there?

Scroll saw advice

If you have money to burn then a good mechanical scrollsaw can be quite useful. Among them Hegner is the premium brand (deserved i would say) but they are also stupidly expensive. Perhaps try a cheaper one first. A halfway decent scrollsaw can be found for around 100/120€ (Scheppach, Einhell among others) if you just want to find out if you like working with one.

Wooden kits for kids

These kits are great learner kits but in my opinion, they are not for pre-teens. There are many fiddly bits to align and this is pretty tough for younger builders to handle. Better for younger modelers are the Midwest Success Series of kits now produced by Model Shipways. They have levels 1 through 4 with the level 1 being the best suited for a younger modeler. I recommend these kits for first time modelers but for adults I suggest level 2 or 3 are most appropriate but hey are inexpensive enough that I would tell an adult to get a level 2 to start with a level 3 next. The level 4 kits are best after one or two lower level kits. They are American Made with American written instructions. They are called the Success Series because if the instructions are followed the build will be a success.

RCMP St. Roch by BartBandy - Billing Boats - 1/72

Back to the build. Finished up that Rokr Space Shuttle kit and let me tell ya, I had a blast building it. Was surprised by the quality of the wood, the instructions and everything it includes with motors, circuit board, lights and wiring. All for 70 bucks Canadian....... and why do we pay so much for our ship models in comparison? ya ya, it is the design work etc etc... definitely not the amount of materials :)

and back to the St Roch, been a busy few weeks around the yard but finally found a few minutes today to start addressing the waterways. With the interactive map of the ship you can also see that the decking is nibbed. Easy to build the waterway, just took some thin basswood I have and have made the strips and glued them into place (will trim when dry). Will have to see if I can effectively do the nib at this scale.

Waterway and deck nib visible and it does extend all around the ship.

Making sure the deck fits before modifying.

Created and glued in. Will trim and sand when dry.
